Dyson V8 Absolute review: Still an excellent cordless vacuum cleaner

Dyson’s latest cordless vacuum cleaner, the V11 Absolute, is now available, and it comes with a host of improvements that put it well ahead of the V8 reviewed in this article. It still has a trigger grip, but all the important parts are within easy reach. This improves the maneuverability of the V8, and with most of the weight in your hands, cleaning ceilings becomes less strenuous. Dyson V8 Absolute Main Unit Our Rating: Pros: Versatile cleaning for all floor typesDyson V8 Absolute Vacuum Cleaner BatteryLonger life: Cons: Expensive What you need to know: The Dyson V8 Absolute cordless vacuum cleaner takes all the great features of the V6 Absolute and takes them to the next level. It doesn’t look drastically different from its predecessor, and Dyson hasn’t made many radical changes, but it’s these subtle improvements, rather than radical changes, that make the V8 Absolute the best cordless vacuum cleaner on the market.

The V8 is much quieter than the V6 before it, making vacuuming much easier. Dyson claims a 50% reduction in noise, and while we have to take Dyson’s word for it, it does feel easier on the ears. This noise isn’t too common, and while vacuuming is never a silent activity, it’s nice to see a reduction in the often excessive noise.

The digital engine in the V8 Absolute is more powerful. It now has a power of 425 watts, compared to 325 watts in the V6. The dust container has also been increased in capacity: from 0.4 to 0.54 liters.

is now doubled in capacity, and the run time is now 40 minutes. A larger dust box means you need to empty and recharge the V8 less often.

According to Dyson, the 20-minute battery life of the previous generation Dyson V8 Absolute was enough for quick cleaning around the house, especially since the device only starts when needed by pressing the power button. Still, the extra life is a plus. When using small power tools,Dyson V8 Absolute Vacuum Cleaner Batteryabout 25 minutes. For the first time, the product is equipped with a battery gauge, so you can always see how much power is left.

Dyson V8 Absolute review: Still an excellent cordless vacuum cleaner

Dyson’s latest cordless vacuum cleaner, the V11 Absolute, is now available and it brings a host of improvements designed to leave the V8 reviewed here in the dust. With a new high-torque head, a top-mounted LCD and a longer battery life, we believe the Dyson V8 Absolute is the best cordless vacuum cleaner you can currently buy, but it doesn’t come cheap, with prices starting at a whopping £600. Dyson V8 Absolute review: ease of use The way the V8 is used hasn’t changed. It still uses a trigger grip, with all the main components located close to the hand. This helps the V8’s manoeuvrability and means cleaning ceilings becomes less tiring as most of the weight is located close to the hand. Dyson V8 Absolute Main Unit

Dyson V8 Absolute review: What you need to know

Dyson’s V8 Absolute cordless vacuum cleaner takes everything that was great about the already impressive V6 Absolute and takes it to the next level. It doesn’t look drastically different from its predecessor, and Dyson has hardly reinvented the wheel, but these sophisticated refinements rather than radical changes make the V8 Absolute the best cordless vacuum cleaner to buy when it first launches.

The V8 is much quieter than the V6 before it, making vacuuming a much less strenuous endeavor. Dyson claims a 50% reduction in noise, and while we have to take Dyson’s word for it, it’s certainly friendlier to the ears. It’s a much lower frequency sound, and while vacuuming is never a silent activity, it’s nice to see that the often overly loud noise output has been reduced.

The digital motor inside the V8 Absolute is more powerful. It now runs at 425W, while the V6 runs at 325W. The dustbin capacity has also been increased from the former’s 0.4L to 0.54L.

Dyson V8 Absolute takes the lead

This is an important change, as the  Dyson Vacuum Cleaner Battery capacity has now doubled, giving it a run time of 40 minutes. The larger dustbin means you’ll be emptying and recharging the V8 much less often.

While Dyson says the previous generation’s 20 minutes of Dyson V8 Absolute battery life was enough for a quick clean of the house, especially because triggering the power button means it only switches on when you need it, the extra runtime is still a good thing. If you use a mini power tool, you’ll get around 25 minutes of Dyson V8 Absolute battery life. For the first time, this product has a battery meter so you know how much charge is left.

Roborock S8 MaxV Ultra robot vacuum review

The Roborock S8 MaxV Ultra is a high-spec, feature-rich, premium robot and mop. It excels at the basics and can reliably clean both hard floors and carpets. The build quality is high and the app is intuitive. However, some of the fancy new features feel underdeveloped: the voice assistant was unreliable in my testing, and the telescopic side brush often failed to extend when needed. The small onboard dustbin and water tank mean it might not be the best choice for people with very large homes. But overall, it’s an impressive robot vacuum cleaner and a good choice for those looking for precise control.

Launched in July 2024, the Roborock S8 MaxV Ultra is a high-spec, feature-rich robot vacuum cleaner and mop with an automatic emptying base. For this model, Roborock has tweaked its basic features to provide a more efficient and effective clean, and added fancier new extras. I tested it to see how it compares to the other best robot vacuum cleaners available today, and whether it’s good value for money.

Overall, I was impressed. In terms of cleaning, it does a very good job, with reliable suction that performed well when I tested different sizes of debris. I found mopping to be equally effective, with the extra side mop doing a good job of mopping to the edges of a room.

There are a number of different options that offer precision cleaning, and there are some useful features, such as the ability to sense carpets and increase suction accordingly, and the ability for the mop pad to be raised 2cm off the ground so the carpet doesn’t get wet if you choose to mop first. The rubber roller is very good at grabbing hair and pushing it straight into the dust cup before it has a chance to tangle, but the same can’t be said for the roller shaft.

Roborock S8 MaxV Ultra Vacuum Cleaner Battery

The S8 MaxV Ultra is the first to feature Roborock’s smart voice assistant, and while being able to command a robot vacuum cleaner is appealing, in actual use I found it struggled to understand the most basic commands. The retractable side brush for reaching under furniture and into corners was equally unreliable. Like a shy turtle, it refused to come out, even when it was clearly needed. Roborock says this robot vacuum can intelligently identify 73 common household objects and avoid them. If you ask it to do so, it will even send you photos of those objects for your approval. In testing, results were mixed – it correctly identified some items, though not every time it encountered them, and it seemed to have a particular problem with socks.

Another use for the built-in camera is to let this robot vacuum do a “pet patrol” while you’re out. It’ll find your pet and take photos, and you can even talk to it directly via the two-way microphone.

Also in this range is the Roborock S8 Max Ultra (sans the “V”). It has slightly less suction power (8,000Pa compared to 10,000Pa for the MaxV), and lacks a smart voice assistant (although it still has third-party voice control) and a camera, which may appeal to those concerned about the privacy issues of these features. It’s also slightly cheaper.

For those who want a high-spec machine, I recommend the S8 MaxV Ultra robovac, which delivers precision cleaning and works equally well on hard floors and carpets. But if you don’t want all those extra features – especially considering some still need a little polish – there are cheaper, less fancy options that are perfect for general use. That’s the short version; read on for my full Roborock S8 MaxV Ultra review.
