HP’s ProBook series of business Ultrabooks promises excellent performance, professional security solutions and the latest equipment. We looked at the HP ProBook 450 G9 and HP ProBook 455 G9, two laptops that have a lot of similarities but are equipped with either Intel or AMD CPUs. Both the HP ProBook 450 G9 and the HP ProBook 455 G9 prove that they are equally good when it comes to battery life. Despite the fact that both laptops are equipped with a rather large 51 Wh battery, the performance is no slouch.

However, Intel has not only caught up in this regard, but also surpassed its rival AMD. The PCMark 10 battery test showed that the 450 G9 (Intel) lasted 12 hours and 14 minutes in idle mode, while the 455 G9 (AMD) ended up with “only” 9 hours and 27 minutes. This result was confirmed in the actual “Modern Office” test. Here, the Intel model also ended up ahead. 9 hours and 12 minutes compared to 8 hours and 19 minutes. So you can get through a workday without a problem with either laptop.

The power sources are also slightly different. The HP ProBook 450 G9 batterycomes with an “HP Fast Charge” 65-watt charger, while the ProBook 455 G9 we tested uses a 45-watt

charger. In the end, both fully charged in about 90 minutes, but the 65-watt power supply charged the first 50% much faster, taking only 30 minutes.

With the HP ProBook 450 G9 and HP ProBook 455 G9, the manufacturer has launched two impeccable business ultrabooks with excellent performance, strong battery life, and impeccable build quality.

Thus, you can also compensate the disadvantage of the ProBook 455 G9 by a significantly slower SSD, which slightly outperforms it in terms of CPU and system performance. On the other hand, the ProBook 450 G9 performs better in demanding video editing, thanks to the dedicated GPU, as well as longer ProBook 450 G9 battery life.

Things didn’t go as smoothly as I expected at WWDC. I was at Computex talking to PC OEMs the week before the show, and they had all just launched Haswell ULT-based Ultrabooks. In hindsight, the move made sense. Apple is going to sell far more MacBook Airs than rMBPs. Apple’s relationship with Intel looks pretty good right now, so it’s no surprise that Apple had enough supply and early enough access to Haswell ULT to launch an almost immediately available MBA at WWDC. The switch to Haswell ULT doesn’t require Apple to switch to a new chassis, which means a less complicated development process.

From the outside, the new MacBook Air is nearly identical to its predecessor. There’s now a second microphone opening on the left side of the machine, but other than that, you’d be hard-pressed to tell this year’s model from the previous generation. The only thing that hasn’t changed, and perhaps should, is the display. The MacBook Air retains last year’s 1366 x 768/1440 x 900 panel, while most of the competition has moved to at least 1080p IPS panels in 13.3-inch models. This year at Computex we saw a lot of systems move to 2560 x 1440 13.3-inch panels, at least as an option, but I expect these will be priced more in line with a 13-inch rMBP rather than a MacBook Air. Honestly, I don’t know the right solution here. Super-high-resolution panels increase cost and power consumption, the latter of which could be offset by using a larger battery – but then you have a 13-inch rMBP. Perhaps the right move for the MacBook Air would be for Apple to at least move to an IPS panel? Or we might see a merger of the 13-inch MBA/rMBP, with an all-new product completely replacing the 11-inch model.
