Intel’s Core Ultra Series 2 processors, also known as Lunar Lake, are carrying a lot of weight. After the release of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X-series earlier this year, it became clear that Intel (and AMD) couldn’t match the performance that the Arm architecture could deliver. Add to that the other troubles Intel is facing, and the company is in a pretty tenuous position.

The biggest threat to Intel right now is Qualcomm with its Snapdragon X-series chipsets. Laptops powered by Snapdragon are proving that it’s possible to achieve great performance while still having excellentAsus Zenbook S 14 battery life when powered. When I reviewed the Asus Vivobook S 15, I saw in Geekbench 6 that the results were nearly identical in both Best Performance and Balanced power modes, whether plugged in or using the Asus Vivobook S 15 battery.

Beyond that, Asus has built a great laptop, the Zenbook S 14. It’s an ultra-thin, ultra-slim, premium-feeling laptop that’s impeccable in every way. It’s the start of a new generation of Intel laptops, and it’s a great one. The Asus Zenbook S 14 utilizes what Asus calls “Ceraluminum” for the lid. Asus uses a special treatment to turn the aluminum into a “high-tech ceramic” that makes the material much more scratch-resistant while keeping aluminum relatively lightweight.

Asus really blew me away with its Zenbook 14 OLED keyboard, which I reviewed back in January, so I knew what to expect this time around. The Zenbook S 14 comes with a really good keyboard that’s very comfortable to type on without any weird awkward moments. If you swipe up or down on the right side, you can change the display brightness, while using the left side you can change the volume. You can also browse videos by swiping along the top, and launch the Asus ScreenXpert app by swiping inwards from the top right. This laptop also offers great audio through its quad-speaker setup. Like the Zenbook 14 OLED I reviewed earlier, the Zenbook S 14 delivers surprisingly powerful audio for its thin chassis, with no noticeable distortion at high volumes. Rather than simply scaling up the 13-inch Summit E13 Flip to 14 inches, the Summit E14 Flip features the comprehensive chassis redesign we’ve been looking for. Performance is top-notch, with no serious CPU or GPU throttling, unlike some HP EliteBook Dragonfly models. Meanwhile, the display is on par in most ways with those on other pro-grade ultrathin laptops from Dell, HP, or Asus. We’d like to see OLED or 90+ Hz options in the future, which seems to be the current trend.

The lack of any WAN options means some users still have reasons to choose a model from the Lenovo ThinkPad, Dell Latitude, or HP Spectre series. Also, while the performance is excellent and the chassis is sturdy, they also lead to very high temperatures and larger designs, respectively. The ProBook is billed as the lightest AMD business laptop. It starts at 0.99 kg, thanks to an all-metal body made of magnesium and aluminum. The laptop I reviewed came with the larger 53 Wh

(there’s also a lighter 42 Wh battery option), which weighed about 1.1 kg. This isn’t the thinnest laptop I’ve tested, but it’s as light as most consumer-grade models. Unlike some laptops, the front of the ProBook doesn’t press into my palm when it rests on the palm rest. The ProBook also comes with a fingerprint sensor and an infrared Windows Hello facial recognition camera (with a privacy shutter). Alternatively, you can set up other authentication methods, such as Bluetooth devices or security questions, through the preinstalled HP Client Security app. This app also allows you to configure other HP security features, such as Sure Start (a self-healing BIOS) and Sure Recover (system recovery). But the most notable security feature is Sure View Reflect, an integrated privacy screen. Press F2 to enable it, which dims the screen. It’s also less likely that someone next to you will be able to see what’s on the screen, because the viewing angle is also severely reduced. The bad news: Even with Sure View Reflect disabled, the screen’s viewing angles and overall visibility are worse than a standard IPS display. In short, the ProBook’s screen may be difficult to see when used outdoors during the day. The ProBook’s other features are also suitable for business users: a comfortable backlit keyboard that doesn’t feel soft, good wireless connectivity (Wi-Fi 6 and optional LTE), and a good selection of ports (two USB Type-A, HDMI, and one USB-C). What I didn’t expect was that the ProBook has dual front-facing speakers, which are surprisingly good for a laptop.

The HP ProBook 635 Aero G7, powered by an AMD Ryzen 7 4700U chip, scored 4,611 on PCMark 10. That’s slightly lower than the Razer Book 13 (4,909), which has a newer Intel processor. More importantly, the ProBook didn’t get as hot as the Razer Ultrabook during the benchmark. The Samsung Galaxy Book 5 Pro 360 is more than just a 2-in-1 laptop, it’s a Copilot PC with built-in AI capabilities. One of those features is Google’s Circle to Search feature. ASUS ZENBOOK 15 OLED REVIEW: DISPLAY

I have to say this is the standout feature of this laptop. The name really says it all, as you’ll find a 15.6-inch OLED display front and center with a peak brightness of 550 nits and a resolution of 2880 x 1620 (16:9 aspect ratio).

ASUS claims the 67Wh battery should last up to 13 hours, but I haven’t quite gotten that level of performance. The battery drained by 20% while streaming The Grand Budapest Hotel on Disney+ for 1 hour and 40 minutes (full brightness). That’s not bad – 500 minutes, so over 8 and a half hours at full brightness on Wi-Fi – and in more general use, you’ll easily get over 10 hours of

life on a single charge. The only real issue is the MacBook Air 15-inch, which easily managed 15 hours of

ASUS ZENBOOK 15 OLED REVIEW: PERFORMANCE

The Zenbook model we reviewed was the “UM3504,” which comes with an AMD Ryzen 7 (7000 series) processor, 16GB of RAM, a 512GB SSD, and AMD Radeon graphics. What does that mean in English? It should be more than capable of handling any average task you throw at it. Basically, if you’re not a professional video editor or a hardcore gamer, you won’t have any problems here.

In terms of noise output, it’s not completely fanless like the MacBook Air, but it’s fairly quiet – it only gets noticeably hot when you’re gaming. As for heat, the bottom can get pretty hot, but the top stays cool at all times.

If you’re into benchmarks, then you might be interested to know that in our Geekbench test, this Zenbook scored 2064 for single-core CPU and 9475 for multi-core. Meanwhile, the GPU measured 28,787 – certainly respectable, but proof that this isn’t a dedicated gaming machine.

ASUS ZENBOOK 15 OLED REVIEW: FEATURES I must admit, I really like the Zenbook’s keyboard and trackpad. There’s plenty of room for precise typing compared to 13-inch machines, and there’s even a number pad (oh my goodness). The arrow keys do feel a little squeezed, but otherwise, it’s pretty good.

If you’re looking for a party trick, this laptop even comes with a 180-degree hinge that allows it to lay completely flat. This could be very useful if you have a standing desk, but otherwise, it’s a bit niche.

In terms of connectivity, these ultra-thin laptops often forgo useful connectors for the sake of fashion, but the Zenbook does a great job. It has one USB-C 4.0, one USB-C 3.2, and even an old-school “fat” USB-A, as well as an HDMI 2.1 port and 3.5mm headphone jack.

Qualcomm steps aside. There may be a new  Dell XPS 13 battery life champion on the way The new Dell XPS 13 was just announced, and on paper it’s an absolute Dell XPS 13 battery life champion. Powered by Intel’s Core Ultra 200 series chips (codenamed “Lunar Lake”), this 13-inch ultra-thin laptop promises “new AI experiences” in a thin, light, and portable form factor.

The announcement of Dell’s thinnest XPS yet coincides with the start of IFA 2024 in Berlin this week—a massive tech event celebrating its 100th anniversary. How thin are we talking about here? Almost absurdly thin, at 05.58 inches wide and weighing just 2.6 pounds. That means it’s nearly identical in size to the excellent Dell XPS 13 (2024) with Snapdragon X Elite that we recently reviewed.

Like its Copilot+ sibling, the new Intel Dell XPS 13 can be upgraded to a 13.4-inch OLED display (2880 x 1800), though the entry-level model is limited to an FHD+ IPS panel. These thermal management configurations include “optimized,” “cool,” “quiet,” and “ultra performance” – meaning it’s unlikely to get too hot from sitting on your lap for long periods of time. As is becoming increasingly common with the best laptops, the Lunar Lake Dell XPS 13 promises new AI features, such as Magix Vegas Pro and Luminar Neo. Both apps claim to speed up your workflow by making video and image editing more efficient.

Finally! A gaming laptop that doesn’t feel like a brick. I can’t say it enough—this MSI machine is breathtakingly light. When I first picked it up, I was stunned. I thought it would be heavy, bulky, and heavy, but the truth is, it’s as light as a whisper. It weighs just 3.5 pounds. To put that in perspective, the MSI Cyborg 14 weighs as much as a 14-inch M3 MacBook Pro. This thing is no heavier than a thick hardcover book.

From a design perspective, the MSI Cyborg 14’s chassis strikes a balance between understated simplicity and futuristic elements. What do I mean by that? Well, the lid is agate-colored, with a very subtle, almost invisible MSI logo on it. However, the edges—the part of the laptop that helps you easily open the lid—are translucent, reminiscent of the transparent Game Boy released in the late ’90s.

You’ll find the same “clear” feel on the hinges and bottom of the Cyborg 14, which let you peek at some of the internal components. However, have a microfiber towel ready; the chassis is prone to fingerprints.

The MSI Cyborg 14, as the name suggests, features a 14-inch, 144Hz refresh rate display with a screen resolution of 1920 x 1200 pixels. But these vague numbers don’t tell much about the display quality, so I tested the screen by opening an F1 trailer on YouTube.

Yes, MSI put a latest-generation CPU in the Cyborg 14. (It comes with a 13th-gen Intel Core i7-13620H, even though we’re currently in an age where 14th-gen processors are the latest and greatest.)

Why? To keep costs down and make gaming accessible to those with less money. And, as you’ll quickly discover, 13th-gen CPUs are still pretty bad.

For a gaming laptop, the MSI Cyborg 14 has surprisingly good MSI Cyborg 14 battery life.

For example, the Asus ROG Zephyrus G14, which also has an Nvidia GeForce RTX 4060 GPU, lasted just 1 hour and 17 minutes on the PCMark 10 gaming test. The Cyborg 14, in contrast, lasted three hours.

That’s the longest a gaming laptop has lasted on a charge since I started testing gaming gear for Mashable.

The MSI Cyborg 14 isn’t for enthusiasts who shrug off midrange graphics, last-generation CPUs, and a low-end keyboard. It’s for casual gamers who want something that’s “good enough.”
