2013 MacBook Air 13-inch review

Things didn’t go as smoothly as I expected at WWDC. I was at Computex talking to PC OEMs the week before the show, and they had all just launched Haswell ULT-based Ultrabooks. However, with a few exceptions, most of the Haswell ULT systems aren’t scheduled to ship until later this year. Even the Acer S7 I picked up in Taipei was a pre-production unit, with final hardware coming next month. Based on what I saw in Taiwan, and the Iris Pro machines Intel had provided me the week before, I assumed the MacBook Pro with Retina display would get the Haswell treatment first. In hindsight, the move made sense. Apple is going to sell far more MacBook Airs than rMBPs. Apple’s relationship with Intel looks pretty good right now, so it’s no surprise that Apple had enough supply and early enough access to Haswell ULT to launch an almost immediately available MBA at WWDC. The switch to Haswell ULT doesn’t require Apple to switch to a new chassis, which means a less complicated development process.

From the outside, the new MacBook Air is nearly identical to its predecessor. There’s now a second microphone opening on the left side of the machine, but other than that, you’d be hard-pressed to tell this year’s model from the previous generation. The only thing that hasn’t changed, and perhaps should, is the display. The MacBook Air retains last year’s 1366 x 768/1440 x 900 panel, while most of the competition has moved to at least 1080p IPS panels in 13.3-inch models. This year at Computex we saw a lot of systems move to 2560 x 1440 13.3-inch panels, at least as an option, but I expect these will be priced more in line with a 13-inch rMBP rather than a MacBook Air. Honestly, I don’t know the right solution here. Super-high-resolution panels increase cost and power consumption, the latter of which could be offset by using a larger battery – but then you have a 13-inch rMBP. Perhaps the right move for the MacBook Air would be for Apple to at least move to an IPS panel? Or we might see a merger of the 13-inch MBA/rMBP, with an all-new product completely replacing the 11-inch model.

Arc Search AI mobile browser confirmed to be launching Android app soon

The artificial intelligence (AI ) mobile browser Arc Search is coming to Android, the company confirmed on Saturday. The browser made its debut early this year and has gained popularity for its AI features such as Browse for Me, where AI reads multiple web pages to display relevant information, AI summaries, and more. In May, the company released a Call Arc feature that offers two-way communication where users can verbally ask queries and the AI responds.

Arc Search confirms it is developing an Android app

In response to a post by a user on Threads who asked if the app is developing an Android version, the official Threads account of Arc Search said that an Android app is coming soon. This is the first time the company behind the app has officially confirmed that it is developing an Android app.

Arc Search was launched on the App Store by the Browser Company in January 2024. Later, the platform was expanded to Mac devices and a version for Windows was launched. However, the browser is still not available on Android. The browser has several unique features such as the Browse for Me mode where, upon receiving a search query,AI browses relevant web pages to find information in an easy-to-read format. It also comes with features like AI summarization, auto-archiving, ad blocking, private browsing mode, safe tags, reading mode, and more.

The company is also regularly adding new features to the app. Since its launch, the Arc Search browser has gained a “Share Browsing Me” mode and a “Call Arc” feature. The latter is a hands-free feature where users can talk to the app and the AI then answers the query. Notably, Arc Search uses the OpenAI API, along with several other AI models, to power the AI features in the browser. For now, the company has not revealed if there will be any Android-specific features. There is no word yet on when the browser will debut on the Android operating system.

JBL Flip 7: 5 things we expect from JBL’s next-generation portable Bluetooth speaker

Given the above, 2024 is already well underway, so it’s reasonable to assume that the Flip 7 is on the way. Perhaps JBL is taking its time to make sure this future product is as good as it can be. 1. More forgiving sound

Frankly, we wouldn’t drastically change the sound of the current Flip 6. It’s lively, full, and vibrant, and the audio profile feels alive and musical. Things aren’t perfect, though.

We noted in our review that while the Flip 5 was fairly forgiving and easygoing in the high frequencies, the Flip 6 “definitely exposes some harshness in recordings.” We could say that this “honesty” of sound could be smoothed out at the high end for a truly balanced, consistently enjoyable listening experience when the new model eventually arrives.

1. Improve JBL Flip battery life

This is a no-brainer. Maybe they hit on the right numbers, but the Flip series has had a combined battery life of 12 hours over the past three generations (JBL Flip 4 battery,JBL Flip 5 battery)

The possible danger is that JBL would have to make the whole device bigger to accommodate a bigger battery, which would significantly improve these numbers. Still, any increase in JBL Flip 7 battery

life would be welcome, especially given that this has been an area of stagnation for the entire series.

2. Other nifty features

The Flip 6 isn’t badly feature-rich, but it’s not quite there yet. There’s room for improvement, and considering JBL is bringing Auracast to many of its upcoming models, including the cheaper, smaller Go 4 and Clip 5 models, we’d like to see the seventh-generation Flip make it, too.

This doesn’t have to be the end. Rival Ultimate Ears’ “Outdoor Boost” is a handy way to boost the sound of your speakers when you’re not indoors (see Epicboom), and the Flip 7 models could adopt a similar version of that. We also lamented the fact that you couldn’t use the Flip 6 to make calls (no built-in mic, sadly) and that there was no 3.5mm aux input for wired listening when the battery died, so these are new additions we’re happy to see. After all, aux inputs aren’t going away, are they?!

3. Optimizing the design

There are some parts of the Flip series that can’t really be changed. For example, going larger is not recommended, as it would go against its portable design philosophy, and any smaller size would affect the size of the drivers used in the Flip. If you want a larger speaker (and more performance), you can always opt for the Charge 5 or Xtreme 3.

That’s not to say the Flip 6’s design can’t be improved. There’s a chance that the entire series is getting a little stale, so perhaps some visual and practical tweaks, like more device controls or more exciting colorways, would add some visual flair to an already pleasing composition. The device’s IP rating isn’t perfect – the Flip 6’s IPX7 rating doesn’t account for dust getting into the device, so a design change to allow it to be IP67 (or similar) certified would be desirable, especially for peace of mind when users take the Flip 7 to the beach.

4. Fast JBL Flip battery charging would be a boost

If the current battery life is perfectly judged and we don’t have more time here, can we reduce the time it takes to charge the battery of JBL Flip 7 Bluetooth speaker? The Flip 6’s 2.5-hour total JBL Flip 6 batterycharge time isn’t ideal when you just want to wake up and listen to your favorite music, so being able to get an hour or two of use from just 10-minute bursts can be very convenient.

Amazfit GTR 4 review: The king of budget smartwatches

It’s hard to justify Fitbit when the Amazfit GTR 4 looks better, lasts longer, and does far more than you’d expect. The TR 4 may not win any design awards, but for an affordable watch it looks pretty good (especially compared to previous versions). Like the Garmin and Polar watches, the GTR 4 supports turn-by-turn directions. It’s easy to import your own routes – I used Komoot and Strava. When you’re out for a run, hike, or bike ride, you can enable turn-by-turn directions. It’s also rated to 5ATM for water resistance, which means you can jump into a pool with it. I wore it in the shower and while washing dishes with no issues.

I got about 10 days on a single Amazfit GTR 4 smartwatch battery charge I’m not an ultramarathoner or triathlete, so I can’t vouch for the GPS battery estimates.

And that’s just one side of the smartwatch. The GTR 4 also comes with a wealth of health and fitness features. You get in-depth sleep metrics and the ability to set a sleep schedule. It has period tracking, continuous heart rate monitoring, blood oxygen tracking, and stress tracking.

What’s impressive, however, is that the GTR 4 includes multi-band GPS – and at this price point. Multi-band GPS isn’t that common yet, and we’ve only started seeing it on fitness watches in the past year or so. In short, it utilizes both L1 and L5 satellite frequencies to provide more accurate GPS in challenging environments like cities or forests. I can’t think of another smartwatch in this price range that has multi-band GPS. Cheap smartwatches often have longer battery life than expensive ones. Usually, this is because they use dim, low-resolution screens that use less power. This isn’t the case with the GTR 4, but Amazfit claims a battery life of 7 days with heavy use (i.e. multi-band GPS, always-on display, etc.). You’ll get about 14 days with normal use. For endurance athletes, enabling multi-band GPS will get you about 25 hours of continuous use, while regular GPS will get you 44 hours. Bottom line — you’ll get more power than a flagship smartwatch.

That being said, I was able to get about 10 days of use on a single charge. Half of that time, I had the always-on display turned off and multi-band GPS enabled at all times. life longer, but with moderate use and an OLED display, 10 days is great. Charging time is not great. It took me about two hours to charge from zero to 100%. This is not the worst, but it stands out as more and more wearables now support fast

Feature Overload

The GTR 4 has a ton of features. Depending on your needs, it might actually have too many. If I went into every single one, this review would easily be over 2,000 words.
