Roborock S8 MaxV Ultra robot vacuum review

The Roborock S8 MaxV Ultra is a high-spec, feature-rich, premium robot and mop. It excels at the basics and can reliably clean both hard floors and carpets. The build quality is high and the app is intuitive. However, some of the fancy new features feel underdeveloped: the voice assistant was unreliable in my testing, and the telescopic side brush often failed to extend when needed. The small onboard dustbin and water tank mean it might not be the best choice for people with very large homes. But overall, it’s an impressive robot vacuum cleaner and a good choice for those looking for precise control.

Launched in July 2024, the Roborock S8 MaxV Ultra is a high-spec, feature-rich robot vacuum cleaner and mop with an automatic emptying base. For this model, Roborock has tweaked its basic features to provide a more efficient and effective clean, and added fancier new extras. I tested it to see how it compares to the other best robot vacuum cleaners available today, and whether it’s good value for money.

Overall, I was impressed. In terms of cleaning, it does a very good job, with reliable suction that performed well when I tested different sizes of debris. I found mopping to be equally effective, with the extra side mop doing a good job of mopping to the edges of a room.

There are a number of different options that offer precision cleaning, and there are some useful features, such as the ability to sense carpets and increase suction accordingly, and the ability for the mop pad to be raised 2cm off the ground so the carpet doesn’t get wet if you choose to mop first. The rubber roller is very good at grabbing hair and pushing it straight into the dust cup before it has a chance to tangle, but the same can’t be said for the roller shaft.

The S8 MaxV Ultra is the first to feature Roborock’s smart voice assistant, and while being able to command a robot vacuum cleaner is appealing, in actual use I found it struggled to understand the most basic commands. The retractable side brush for reaching under furniture and into corners was equally unreliable. Like a shy turtle, it refused to come out, even when it was clearly needed. Roborock says this robot vacuum can intelligently identify 73 common household objects and avoid them. If you ask it to do so, it will even send you photos of those objects for your approval. In testing, results were mixed – it correctly identified some items, though not every time it encountered them, and it seemed to have a particular problem with socks.

Another use for the built-in camera is to let this robot vacuum do a “pet patrol” while you’re out. It’ll find your pet and take photos, and you can even talk to it directly via the two-way microphone.

Also in this range is the Roborock S8 Max Ultra (sans the “V”). It has slightly less suction power (8,000Pa compared to 10,000Pa for the MaxV), and lacks a smart voice assistant (although it still has third-party voice control) and a camera, which may appeal to those concerned about the privacy issues of these features. It’s also slightly cheaper.

For those who want a high-spec machine, I recommend the S8 MaxV Ultra robovac, which delivers precision cleaning and works equally well on hard floors and carpets. But if you don’t want all those extra features – especially considering some still need a little polish – there are cheaper, less fancy options that are perfect for general use. That’s the short version; read on for my full Roborock S8 MaxV Ultra review.
