The DJI Phantom 3 is so easy to set up and fly, and it’s a great way to take your drone obsession to the next level The DJI Phantom 3 Professional hovers motionlessly in front of me like a giant, plastic, very angry wasp, with its directional LEDs flashing, which makes it look scary. So far, all I’ve done is turn it on and hit the takeoff button. The drone handles everything else.

If the camera is a big step forward, the new controller and app represent a huge leap forward. Both borrow from DJI’s higher-end (and more expensive) Inspire 1 drone, and they make taking off, flying, and recording much simpler than before.

First, setup is now much easier. Download the new DJI Pilot app (which also contains a number of tutorials), and you just plug it into your mobile device via the provided cable to connect.

It’s a little fiddly to do everything in the order in which you do it, but really, there’s nothing much more important than that. No more fiddly connecting via Wi-Fi – just plug in, calibrate the compass on the drone, and you’re ready to fly.

Thanks to GPS, a digital compass, an altimeter, and gyro sensors, it maintains its position completely stable with no user input required—even moderate winds only cause it to wobble momentarily. Meanwhile, it records high-quality 4K video footage via a motorized, stabilized onboard camera, and streams live 720p video directly to my smartphone screen.

It’s amazing how much technology DJI has packed into its latest consumer-grade quadcopter. However, visually, it looks very similar to its predecessor, the Phantom Vision 2+, which I reviewed earlier this year. The only notable differences are the new gold badge and the gold stripes adorning the drone’s arms. So what’s new? The answer is that, despite the exterior, there’s a lot going on.

First, the new camera may look the same, but it’s capable of recording 4K video at up to 30fps and 1080p video at up to 60fps. It shoots 12-megapixel stills, up to seven frames in a burst, and automatically captures bracketed shots and time-lapse sequences.

And the results from its Sony sensor are stunning, far better than what I was able to capture with the Vision 2+. With a maximum video bitrate of 60Mbits/sec, it can pick out tiny details from hundreds of meters away; I could see blades of grass and leaves moving in the breeze. Dynamic range is equally impressive, and the camera does a very good job with extreme areas of brightness and shadows. The lens isn’t as wide-angle as it used to be, so there’s much less of a fisheye effect in footage. As with the Vision 2+, the camera is mounted on an active motorized gimbal. This keeps the camera rig rock-steady even in moderate winds or close to the ground, and the overall effect is very professional. With a little practice—though you still have to be careful with the controls or the footage will look jerky—it’s possible to produce super-smooth footage that wouldn’t look out of place in Tour de France coverage.

It’s a little fiddly to do everything in the order in which you do it, but really, nothing really matters. No more fiddly connecting via Wi-Fi – just plug in, calibrate the on-drone compass, and you’re ready to fly. The new model even makes it easier to fly the drone indoors: a pair of position sensors in the Phantom 3’s belly means it can stay stable without a GPS signal – though you’ll still need a decent-sized space to fly if you don’t want to risk a crash. Residents of cramped Victorian terraced houses need not apply.

Conclusion

The DJI Phantom 3 is such a great performer and so easy to fly and shoot video that my biggest concern when testing it was finding a safe spot to fly. Even living in a leafy suburb outside London, I could only find a few nearby spots that were off the beaten path and far enough from buildings and roads to meet the rules for flying this type of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV).

Intel’s Core Ultra Series 2 processors, also known as Lunar Lake, are carrying a lot of weight. After the release of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X-series earlier this year, it became clear that Intel (and AMD) couldn’t match the performance that the Arm architecture could deliver. Add to that the other troubles Intel is facing, and the company is in a pretty tenuous position.

The biggest threat to Intel right now is Qualcomm with its Snapdragon X-series chipsets. Laptops powered by Snapdragon are proving that it’s possible to achieve great performance while still having excellentAsus Zenbook S 14 battery life when powered. When I reviewed the Asus Vivobook S 15, I saw in Geekbench 6 that the results were nearly identical in both Best Performance and Balanced power modes, whether plugged in or using the Asus Vivobook S 15 battery.

It’s the start of a new generation of Intel laptops, and it’s a great one. The Asus Zenbook S 14 utilizes what Asus calls “Ceraluminum” for the lid. Asus uses a special treatment to turn the aluminum into a “high-tech ceramic” that makes the material much more scratch-resistant while keeping aluminum relatively lightweight.

Asus really blew me away with its Zenbook 14 OLED keyboard, which I reviewed back in January, so I knew what to expect this time around. The Zenbook S 14 comes with a really good keyboard that’s very comfortable to type on without any weird awkward moments. If you swipe up or down on the right side, you can change the display brightness, while using the left side you can change the volume. You can also browse videos by swiping along the top, and launch the Asus ScreenXpert app by swiping inwards from the top right. This laptop also offers great audio through its quad-speaker setup. Like the Zenbook 14 OLED I reviewed earlier, the Zenbook S 14 delivers surprisingly powerful audio for its thin chassis, with no noticeable distortion at high volumes. Above the display is a 1080p webcam, complete with an infrared camera for Windows Hello and even support for presence detection. The webcam itself is decent quality,

MSI Summit E14 Flip Evo A12M convertible review: A legitimate alternative to HP, Dell or Lenovo

Prosumer status. MSI has already broken into the gaming space and continues to work towards the lucrative office and business space with its Summit series of prosumer devices. The Summit E14 Flip is one of the best models in the series to date, with build quality on par with the big OEMs. Not to be confused with the Summit E14 Flip, the Summit E14 Flip is the convertible version with a 360-degree hinge and an overall different chassis design. This model debuted in March alongside the smaller, newer 13-inch Summit E13 Flip.

Rather than simply scaling up the 13-inch Summit E13 Flip to 14 inches, the Summit E14 Flip features the comprehensive chassis redesign we’ve been looking for. It loses some of the gold trimmings of its smaller brother, but the gains in rigidity and build quality are arguably worth it, especially from a reliability-first pro perspective. It doesn’t currently feel as sturdy as the HP Spectre, but it’s certainly getting close.

The Summit E14 Flip is for prosumers and students who want the versatility of a convertible subnotebook form factor without sacrificing performance.

Performance is top-notch, with no serious CPU or GPU throttling, unlike some HP EliteBook Dragonfly models. Meanwhile, the display is on par in most ways with those on other pro-grade ultrathin laptops from Dell, HP, or Asus. We’d like to see OLED or 90+ Hz options in the future, which seems to be the current trend.

The lack of any WAN options means some users still have reasons to choose a model from the Lenovo ThinkPad, Dell Latitude, or HP Spectre series. Also, while the performance is excellent and the chassis is sturdy, they also lead to very high temperatures and larger designs, respectively. Choosing the Summit E14 Flip means sacrificing a little portability in exchange for a fast CPU.
